As always the best routines come from real life experiences. This is a question that actually came up in a conversation and as soon as it happened I knew it would make a great opener. I used it for the rest of the night.

Just so you can learn the structure of how to make your own routines I will actually lay out the conversation for you.

    Me: So where are you two guys from?

    Them: Rhode Island!

    Me: You guys are a little far from home. I hope you left a trail of breadcrumbs like Drew Barrymore did for E.T. By the way, what kind of candies were those anyway?

There was a "light bulb" moment when I didn't know the answer and neither did they. Obviously, it's not necessary for anyone involved to know the right answer; it just gets you talking.

Not too much to it, eh? That's just how it works. If you are vibing and you tell a story that gets good reactions you should make a mental note and when you have downtime figure out why it worked, if it can be improved, and how you can always use it.

Conversely, if a story tanks also examine what happened. Great chess players and football coaches learn much more from their losses than their wins.

As with all openers, there are many ways to go from the E.T. example, such as alternate topics like if they say Twizzlers or Skittles. It's up to you to figure out all of the possible contingencies.
